The Kennet Valley

Explore ancient tracks, river valleys and pretty villages at your leisure

on a 3 day quided tour of the Kennet Valley.

A 2 night, 3 day fully guided group holiday with your own horse is based in a charming English country village in the beautiful Kennet valley on the Wiltshire/Berkshire border. The area is interesting both historically and geologically with a wide variety of wildlife. The terrain will suit most horses and riders being varied and easy going for the most part, but a little challenging in places. The guides will adjust the riding dependent on the group to suit all abilities and paces.

The riding days vary ensuring you see all the area has to offer from river valley riding, through ancient water meadows thronging with beautiful birdsong and wildlife to medieval villages and Roman ruins. There are steep climbs onto ancient Ridgeway tracks where you can immerse yourself in the fabulous views, said to be the oldest in England.

For more experienced riders there are plenty of opportunities for fast riding as well as taking a slower pace to enjoy the countryside or the picturesque villages with a gentle hack along secluded lanes, bridleways and permissive routes where you can take photographs en route. You should plan to be in the saddle for 5 – 6 hours each day with breaks for coffee, lunch and places of interest at intervals.

This guided tour is designed to provide you and your horse with a fabulous opportunity to spend stress free time together in stunning surroundings with like minded people. The guides are friendly, experienced riders and are very knowledgeable about the area. Throughout the tour they will share the history and legends of the Kennet Valley with you.

The location is convenient and acccessible from either the M4, A4 or A338. There is ample secure parking for lorries and trailers.

Sample Itinerary

Day one:

Afternoon: Settle your horse into accommodation, welcome and relax in your room.

Evening: Approximately 6.30pm meet the guides and group for an introductory talk and dinner.

Day Two

After a hearty breakfast set out for the morning ride on fabulous cross country tracks, through medieval villages, along water meadows and onto a magnificent Elizabethan mansion with a rather scandalous history. After a visit to the house and gardens it’s into the country past Roman ruins and out to open fields and wide tracks. After returning to the yard late afternoon there’s a chance to unwind for a couple of hours before joining the group for dinner at traditional 15th century Inn for supper.

Day Three:

We go high up onto the Ridgeway to take in the stunning views across 3 counties of England. This oldest ‘road of Europe’ dates back to the Bronze Age and you will see ancient monuments along the chalk route. There’s an opportunity for cantering and the day is mainly off road. This ride is a complete contrast to the previous day with vistas and fantastic views of the afternoon where the tour ends.

Accommodation:

Premium country accommodation at a fabulous boutique Bed and Breakfast in the heart of a 15th century village.  Prices are based on sharing twin or double rooms. Breakfast is a splendid feast with freshly squeezed juices, fruits, cereals yoghurts and cooked choices freshly prepared to your order.

During the day we carry snacks and call at cafés and local pubs for lunch, morning coffee and afternoon tea. Evening meals are in traditional country pubs with the group. Meals for vegetarians and other dietary preferences are available.

Accommodation for horses/horse meals:

On most tours you can choose if your horse is stabled or grazed. Coarse mix, hay and bedding are provided. Our establishment is friendly and personal and every care is taken to ensure your horse is comfortable and settled.

Group information:

The minimum group size is 4 and the maximum group size 8 (including the leaders).

Weather and clothing:

The weather can be variable as the riding days cover very different landscapes in a short time. Parts of the ride are very sheltered and protected from the elements while others are on high Ridgeway tracks. We recommend wearing layers of riding or outdoor clothing including waterproofs to cope with the variety of weather conditions - plus a change of attire for evenings.

Horses / Equipment:

Whilst the guides will carry first aid equipment, ropes and other day equipment it is your responsibility to ensure your horse is fit and healthy before the tour. If you have problems getting your horse past any particular hazards please alert the guides before the trip and they will help you and plan the riding accordingly to assist. This holiday will definitely help you and your horse overcome many relationship and confidence issues. We provide a full suggested kit list once bookings are confirmed.
