Lincolnshire Wolds

"This is a real hidden jewel in the country; lovely riding and beautiful villages. Hosts are in traditional farm accommodation with a warm welcome." - Karen Johnson, Managing Director, Redlands Equestrian

This network takes in the southern part of the Lincolnshire Wolds between Louth and Horncastle. The countryside comprises rolling hills with big open skies, so the going is generally easy and you can cover the ground quickly. Some of the hills reach 500 feet above sea level, and there are wonderful views over the flat land around the Humber estuary to the north and Lincoln cathedral to the southwest. On a clear day, you can see right across the Fens and the Wash to the North Norfolk coast!

The riding is seriously wonderful. There are very few gates because there's hardly any livestock, and there's very little traffic on the lanes, many of which are old drove roads with huge grassy verges.

We have 2 and 3-day trail rides between Horncastle and Louth, and a one-centre holiday with various day rides. There is also a ride into the flat lands near the coast. You can combine rides to make a longer break or add the beach ride to any holiday as an extra day. The terrain is wide open with gentle, rolling hills. The area is also good for mountain biking.

Beach Ride - We have a riding permit from English Nature for the beach at Theddlethorpe to the north of Skegness. You do need to box there as there are no direct crossings over the A-road which runs along the coast - and you can add it as an extra day to any of the other rides on the network.

LincsThis route from Swaby to Low Toynton, via Oxcombe, Belchford and Hemingby, is either a 19.5 mile ride via Little Cawthorpe, with a pub stop, or a shorter more direct ride via Burwell which will reduce the distance by about 4 miles. The longer route means negotiating a fairly large ford bypassing the A16 but the shorter route will take you along the A16 for ¼ mile, which needs care.

LincsThe ford can get deep but is used regularly by the local hunt and riders. The ride takes you through remote and tiny hamlets to the hilliest part of the Wolds and needs plenty of time to enjoy the vistas. More importantly, if conditions are right, there are several places for a good, long canter.
