Great Ridge

"Everything was perfect, from the booking to the final day. We were sorry to leave."- Sara Williams

small great ridgeThe Great Ridge is a small network bounded by Longleat to the north and the Nadder Valley to the south, where our one-centre host at Sutton Mandeville links it with Cranborne Chase. The Great Ridge network is hilly in parts (3-400 ft), with big-scale rolling chalk downs in the north, which have good views and long canters, and a large area of ancient woodland along the Great Ridge itself. The countryside in the south is smaller scale and more intimate, with classic English villages. The riding is a bit slower, but countryside changes faster. OK for gates and good for mountain-biking.

ridgeA one day ride starting in Brixton Deverill following a Roman road through Grovelly wood, atop the Great Ridge, ending up under Buxbury hill, on the edge of Cranborne Chase. This is a varied ride through downs and woods in the morning, followed by small-scale hills and fields in the afternoon, which takes in much of the pretty, watercress laden Deverill and Wylye valleys.
