South Wales

Riding ability: (?)

Suitable for: non-riders families

Our South Wales, one-centre holiday is set in an ancient forest. Serene and beautiful, this is the perfect choice for a short break to escape from the daily grind with your horse.

The holiday takes place in an area of outstanding natural beauty within a forest that stretches across more than 30,000 acres of South Wales between the western edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park and the southern edge of the Cambrian Mountains. Nestled in the Cothi valley, the river Cothi is the largest tributary of the River Tywi noted for its trout and sea trout and for its spectacular scenery.

The tranquil forest tracks make for easy, trouble-free riding as there are no gates or roads to negotiate. The terrain is vast and beautiful with commanding views and most of the ascents are gradual climbs. The forest tracks are lined with pretty flowers in spring and covered in stunning leaves in summer and autumn. We believe this holiday is ideal for those wanting, a one-centre ‘get away from it all’ break, those new to taking their horse on holiday and it is also suitable for less experienced riders.

Although it offers the complete get away, the location is very convenient, close to the motorway network and readily accessible from Carmarthen via the M4 and A48, but you will still feel like you are a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

  Riding days:

Day 1: Round the mountain 14.75 miles: You ride up the eastern shoulder of Mynndd Rhos-wen and join forestry tracks with wonderful views of the forest, Brechfa village and Cothi valley.

Day 2: Golden Oak Grove 18.25 miles: This is a really interesting day of contrasts exploring the south west of Brechfa forest and the surrounding hills. The scenery is breathtaking and the area feels remote, ancient and unspoilt.

Day 3: Pib Valley Holloway 17.25 miles: On this ride, you climb along the Pib valley before riding along the edge of the forest through majestic oak and ash trees from the middle ages and through pretty unspoilt villages. This ride does not use bridleways and will feel wonderfully remote. You won’t see signs but our guide notes and maps are comprehensive.

Accommodation is in a charming, comfortable and traditional working sheep farm, with excellent horse facilities, stables and an experienced horse host.

fieldsA 19 mile petal ride that splits into two routes; with one heading north from Forest Stables around the south western end of Brechfa Forest and the other heading south into the surrounding hills. Heading south will give you an additional diversion to the pub in Felingwmuchaf, where you can break for a well earned lunch.

Taken together, they are designed to make up a longer figure of eight ride – although you can also ride each half separately as two shorter rides.
