In some parts of the world people are happy when they have a white Christmas, but in Kenya they are happy when they get a “green” Christmas, and once again it is!! Thanks to the November rains the Chyulu Hills have exploded into life, with rich green grass growing tall ecosystem-wide.  With beautiful little wild flowers popping up, such as the ‘Gloriosa superba’ or flame lily, and enchanting birdsong all around they have all the makings of an amazing Christmas and New Year celebration. Horse riding holiday in Kenya

In anticipation of Christmas we have started a game sighting competition for our guides, with the winner recording the best collection over the advent dates of Christmas. Like our own African Advent Calendar! Top sightings so far include a cheetah hunting a gazelle on the plains last week, followed by a horseback sighting of the lioness Nemasi and her cubs close to the lava flow that runs to the north. An evening ride finished with sundowners on the plains last weekend, and on driving back the group saw an Aardvark and two honey badgers out on the plains, and a large breeding herd of elephant around the lodge water hole and behind the stables.

Those of you who are familiar with the Chyulus will know that the resident elephant are bulls, with the females and calves only coming through during rainy months. Several breeding herds, numbering between 11 and 20 have been seen this week, with some calves of under a year old. Thanks to the lush green grass all the animals, including the horses, are looking fat, healthy and jolly in true St. Nick fashion.

As we count down the days to Christmas and New Year we can’t even begin to guess what other surprises this perfect slice of Africa has hidden up her sleeve. The first safari of the season is now underway. Charlotte Agnew, a young event rider from the UK, is on the ride this week. Look out for her write-up in UK riding magazines in the New Year! And with all of that to look forward to, all of us here at Redlands Equestrian want to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
