Take Your Horse to Historic Bath

"Taking our horses on holiday, we wanted to combine great riding with a day off sightseeing. Redlands looked after the horses and we managed to do everything...unbelieveable" Christina Morgan

Treat yourself and your horse to some culture with a visit to historic Bath in the South West of England. Bursting with history, the earliest documented inhabitants were the Romans who enjoyed the famous thermal springs that Bath is so famous for.

In the 18th Century the town was popular with royalty and the aristocracy  who enjoyed 'taking the waters' at the Pump Rooms and attending colourful assemblies. During this period Bath was re-designed as an outdoor showplace for Georgian society. Evidence is still there today with the magnificent honey coloured limestone terraces and curved, panoramic crescents.

Surrounded by picturesque countryside which is perfect for riding and close to the ancient town of Marlborough, you will be spoiled for choice with things to see and do. Our riding trails take in lush water meadows, traditional country villages and high ridegways with fabulous views. You will have plenty of opportunity for fast canters as well as sedate riding.

Our five night package includes 3 and 4 day place-to-place or petal rides and a day or two sightseeing in Bath while we take care of your horses.

Bespoke 5 night package including 3 or 4 days place-to-place or petal rides and one or two days sightseeing in Bath while we take care of your horses.

From our holidays you can either catch a train to Bath Spa station or drive or take a taxi into Bath. We recommend if possible the train; we can arrange to get you to the connecting station if you need this. The station is located in the centre of Bath, just a short walk from the city’s shops and main attractions, and you will receive your first glimpse of Bath’s panorama as your train descends amongst the signature rolling hills of this World Heritage Site. If you would like to drive there are several city centre car parks. You will receive your first glimpse of Bath Abbey as your train pulls in to the station and the Abbey can be seen wherever you are in the city centre but it’s well worth a look inside. We recommend you visit the Roman Baths and try afternoon tea in the Pump Rooms or the Royal Crescent. The new Thermae Spa has 2 hour sessions where you can take the Bath waters and experience a range of spa treatments utilising the natural hot springs that dwell beneath Bath. It includes access to the roof-top pools, steam rooms and waterfall shower and the café/restaurant.

Bath has many parks and gardens; why not try mini golf at Royal Victoria Park. There are Georgian parks and gardens in the centre of the town by river at Pulteney Bridge as well as Sidney Gardens and Henrietta Gardens. From Sidney Gardens you can access the canal and take a walk into the outstanding countryside.

We recommend that, whilst in Georgian Bath, you take a boat trip, walking tour or bus tour of the city. It’s a great way to get acclimatised, and these are all available in the centre close to the Abbey.

Sample riding day

A 17 mile ride takes you along the Ridgeway, one of the oldest tracks in Europe.  You ride through a huge Iron Age fort and return through the gentler, more intimate country to the south of the Ridgeway.  If you have time, it is well worth taking the second pub-stop diversion to East Garston, which is very pretty.  There are lots of canters and not many gates on this ride and the directions are pretty straightforward, so you may find you cover the ground more quickly than on rides in other networks.
