Mongol Ride

Horse riding holiday in MongoliaThis horse riding challenge will take you into the homeland of Genghis Khan.  Ride through partly forested, partly mountainous landscapes, interrupted only by streams and rivers. Starting from the Baga Khentii Mountains, you will ride for 8 days finishing at the Bogd Khan Mountain just south east of Ulaanbaatar. On the way you will encounter nomadic life at its finest. Riding with “nomads” you will experience their hospitality, and learn about their lives. Your horse riding adventure begins in Ulaanbaatar, the capital, before heading out to a secluded region, (for the most part untrodden by tourists) but still within a few hours’ journey from the capital. In the city you’ll spend a day visiting the sights including the Gandan Monastery and the Bogd Khan Palace.

Day 1

Arrive in Ulaanbaatar and settle into your hotel. Explore the city and in the evening your guide will take you to a cultural performance, which will be followed by dinner in a local restaurant.

Day 2

After breakfast visit the Gandan Monastery and the National History Museum followed by lunch at a local restaurant. You will then take a 2 hour train journey to Manda. On arrival you will be met by your horseman and will start towards the Bayangol River near the Bayangol Resort, a ride of approximately 8kms.

Day 3

After breakfast, ride through wide-open land to Mount Tsokhiot, passing the small village of Udleg. Your ride then takes you through deep forests rich in Siberian larch, and home to deer, wolves, and moose. Camp in the larches near Sanzai Mountain, having covered approx. 30kms.

Day 4

Today’s adventure takes you along the slope of Mount Ikh Yan, the Uliastain River, to the plain of Burkhantiin Zuu where you will camp. Discover the rock paintings of ancient Gods. Today’s ride will cover approx. 20 kms.

Day 5

After breakfast at the camp, ride towards the Terelj River down to Uliastai River, via Davaany Am, covering about 30kms. You will camp overnight on the banks of the Terelj River.

Day 6

Spend a relaxing day at the Terelj River in the Terelj National Park. Feel free to ride, fish or hiking around the area. You can take a morning ride to a local nomadic family, or simply take it easy and rest your weary limbs.

Day 7

Continue along the Terelj River, leaving civilisation behind and discover squirrels, marmots and various birds. Camp on the slope of Shilj Ereeny Pass, a place of unique plants (especially flowers) and animals. Today’s ride will cover approx. 30kms.

Day 8

Following breakfast ride up to Gachuurt's Mount Nuramt, the heart of the Khentii Mountain range, on the banks of the mighty Tuul River. Here you’ll have the opportunity to observe and explore the area with a trained guide. Dinner and overnight stay at a Nomads ger camp. Today’s ride will cover approx. 30kms.

Day 9

Relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the area. Hike along the forested hillsides covered with mountain flowers and crystal clean streams, and develop an appetite for “Khorkhog” a traditional specialty of mutton and vegetable cooked in hot stones under high pressure. Partake in the 'Riding under Moonlight' organised trek and stay overnight at the same ger camp.

Day 10

After breakfast return to Ulaanbaatar and your hotel by vehicle. Visit the Bogd Khan Winter Palace, home of the last religious King of Mongolia, and the Fine Arts Museum. You may also have time for some last minute shopping. Lunch and Dinner will be in a local restaurant.

Day 11
